CUNDALL, Joseph. The Babes in the Wood. London: Joseph Cundall, 1849. With 10 hand-colored copper etchings (including title page) after the Marchioness of Waterford. Folio, [12] ff; gilt-lettered red boards (rebacked). First edition, LARGE PAPER ISSUE, one of the scarcest and most ambitious of Cundall's books. An unusually fine example of Victorian hand-coloring, capturing the beauty of an Illuminated medieval manuscript rather than the usual unrefined commercial stenciling of the period. DOYLE, Richard. Punch's Almanack, 1848. [Special Hand-Colored Edition]. Illustrated with wood-engravings by John Leech and Richard Doyle. London: The Punch Office, 85, Fleet Street, [1847]. Large rto, 13 ff gilt-edged. With 12 full page plates, including 6 wood-engraved pictorial borders and 25 illustrations by Doyle, all HAND-COLORED . Stiff, green paper wrappers. This was a special colored edition printed on better paper than the newsprint of the ordinary issues. In the 1848 issue Doyle created lively renderings of the rich and famous figures of the time. The May/June entry, for example depicted the famous Swedish singer Jenny Lind. Doyle also portrays the London theatre season. This issue was so popular that the separate color edition was printed. Very Rare. Special issues for other years have not been found. Rebacked, some slight foxing on back cover, otherwise in fine condition. Engen, Richard Doyle, p 55. JAPANESE CHILDREN"S BOOK. Kodomo no kumi (Children's Kingdom). Tokyo, Showa 9 (9th year of Imperial Reign), 1934. January, Tokyosha. KnK was a monthly magazine for children published from 1922 to 1944, bound comic book fashion w/staples, and each issue contains 36-44 pages, most in full color, or with b&w photos. Most pages are printed with full edge bleeds and all with full gutter bleeds, a technology introduced by this magazine. The former echoes the explosive quality of modern art in extending the picture plane beyond the frame; while the latter intimately engages the reader. Printed on acid-free, soft, absorbent paper which yields an intensity and subtlety of color characteristic of pochoir. Both text and illustration appear on the same page in conjunction. It is impossible to overstate the importance of these developments to the 20th Century book publishing.

First edition, 24 pp. This rare publication of a Struwwelpeter parody is bound in original color printed pictorial wrappers. The coloured illustrations and verses printed one side only. Slight wear to the spine otherwise a fine copy. On page 1 it states "A parody on the original Strawwelpeter by Robert and Philip Spence. Presented by them to the Daily Sketch War Relief Fund"
