Ernst dating from 1931-32, 7 of which are hand-colored. 8vo. 122 pp. No. 58 on Alma Marais from a total edition of 610 copies. Wrappers designed by the artist. A superb example of Ernst's surrealist book illustration in which the artist continues to disturb us with the juxtaposition of unlike objects and characters. Ernst has included an engraving of the planetoid Maximiliana, which was later to become the subject of a great collaboration between Ernst and Iliazd. Max Ernst Beyond Surrealism; Rainwater 31. ERNST, Max. Les Malheurs des Immortels, by Paul ELUARD. With 21 steel-engravings after collages by M. Ernst. Paris: Librairie Six, [1922].8vo, 43 pp.; lettered self-wrappers. On Simili Japon. A lovely copy of this rare fragile book. These prose poems were a joint collaboration between poet and artist, in an exchange of letters while Ernst was summering in the Tyrol with Tristan Tzara and the Arps. These small pamphlets were privately printed by the poet as gifts to friends. They are almost impossible to find the complete set and in fine condition. HUGNET, Georges. Huit jours a trebaumec [Paris]. Privately printed for the
author, 1969. With 82 photogravures after photocollages by the author. Designed by Henri Mercher. Slim 4to, [92] pp; decorated two-color photogravure cover in imitation of a Michelin guide, within its gray cloth slipcase. Beautiful copy. An edition of 102 copies this being Examplaire de Collaborateur. These collages, consisting of pictures cut from magazines combined with original photographs, were completed in 1947 but not published until 1969. Hugnet was a prominent figure in the French art world, being a poet, artist, and filmaker who was associated with the Surrealists and worked within the Resistance during World War II. Hugnet, Georges. 1961. Chez L'Auteur. Paris 1961. Privately printed by the author, [1961]. With 4 photomontages hand-colored by the author. 8vo., [70]; pale blue wrappers. Copy LXVIII of 60 lettered copies on Velin de Rives, with an extra suite of the black-and-white plates. These surreal photomontages show Hugnet's sense of humor and references to sexuality. MASSON, Andre. La Pieuvre ("The Octopus"). Text by Victor Hugo. Buenos Aires: Editions des Lettres Francaises, 1944. 4to, 40 pp., with 8 full-page illustrations after drawings by A. Masson. No. 90 on papier polar of a total edition of 345. The text represents an extract from V. Hugo's work, Travail-leurs de la mer ("Workers of the Sea"). Some browning around edges of wrappers, otherwise in fine condition.
